Milton Keynes vs Kettering

An incredible number of players and supporters travelled to Milton Keynes, meaning the Under 7s were able to split into 3 teams. The Kettering coaching staff set up early to allow the players to warm up and carry out pre-game drills.

Milton Keynes had enough players for 2 teams ensuring there were 2 games being played at all times. The ‘non-playing’ Kettering team continued to develop their individual core skills through activities devised by the coaching team.

The day produced a mixed bag of score results, but more importantly player development continues. During the games there was notable improvement in defence and keeping on-side. Lots of great tags, backed up by loud shouts of ‘tag’ and holding captured tags high in the air to make it clear that a tag had occurred. The emphasis on keeping on-side was very evident; all Kettering teams looked more proficient at staying in front of the attacking team.

Kettering scored some really good individual tries, this prompted an experimental game whereby Kettering were tasked by the coaches to pass at least 3 times before scoring. This had the players trying to get the ball to do the work and passing into space rather than running ‘the long way around’.

At close of play the coaches were all very happy with the players, mentioning future development ideas and reviewed all the good play from the day. Particular mention was made to some really good inter-passing, defence and team work.

The day’s rugby was finished off with, of course, the obligatory post match hot dog and an intimate clinch between coaches Toby and Phil!!!
