Our first home game of the season against Towcester was always going to be tough. They have always been a big, physical & fast side. Having asked to see their captains driving licence to make sure he was 12 we kicked off for 4 x 15 minute games.
Towcester started fast & with intent, their speed at the breakdown seemed to take us by surprise. The first 15 was all Towcester with our boys defending as hard as they could. As well as their dominance in the break down they had very fast wingers who ran in some impressive scores.
After a brief chat & discussion about where we could improve the boys went out for game two. The boys lifted themselves & improved at the break down & won some rucks. We also scrummed well with a bit of pack dominance at times. The backs & wingers managed to open the game up a bit for us & we saw our first points on the board.
Another brief chat & another change of personal & we were ready for the 3rd session. We were definitely making progress with some great tackling with a few backs moves thrown in to help mix up our attack.
A brief chat & our final session was underway. Again the boys faced up well. We saw some tired legs out there but their hearts were still in it. We saw some great play & the game did open up for us. We almost had an amazing intercept try but it wasn't to be.
In the past some of the boys have got away with tackling around the arms due to they're size. It was a different story today. Faced with similar size or bigger players this just didn't cut it. The boys with the best tackle technique were the most successful today. We saw our smallest players bring down their biggest. As coaches we can see what we need to work on with the boys. line speed, rucking, tackling & a bit of handling.
The boys gave everything today, we can't knock their heart & spirit. They didn't drop their heads or start blaming each other, they stuck together until the end. They gave it their all & we can't ask anymore than that. Be proud, dust yourselves down, come to training & be ready for our next round of matches.
