A bright and breezy Sunday morning saw the under 14's travel to Towcester for their opening league game of the 2014-5 season.
Kettering attacked from the kick-off but despite having good territorial position it was Towcester who deservedly took the lead after seven minutes. After probing attacks from both sides a well worked move from the front of a home line out saw Towcester break up the left wing and an elusive run past several attempted tackles was rewarded by an excellent try - followed up by a conversion from wide out.
This wake up call spurred Kettering into action and a quick feed from Tasker Stables set debutant Dom Ferreira charging into the heart of the home defence just outside their 22.He was eventually brought down but had drawn in several defenders - giving Henri Styles the room to break through the defence and score by the posts. Henri also converted his own try.
Both sides continued to keenly contest possession and Towcester showed their strength in the set piece - winning good possession and forcing Kettering to attack from deep. After twenty minutes Cameron Sharpe took the ball up well from his own 22 , beating several defenders and setting the backs in motion, From the breakdown the ball was recycled quickly by Dan Harley and Chris Owen showed his strength in breaking through several tackles to crash over and touch down under the posts - again converted by Henri.
With five minutes left another excellent break from Cameron Sharpe was supported well by the tireless Jess Clements who showed his pace arriving at speed to burst onto a well timed pass and beat the defence to score under the posts.
HALF TIME TOWCESTRIANS 7 - KETTERING 21
The second half saw Kettering up the pace and after three minutes George York made a great midfield break - putting his backs into space before Hayden Bennett was released on the left wing to fly in under the posts. Henri converted
Kettering's attacking play was now relentless and Cameron made another strong break, holding off three tacklers before offloading to Josh Owen for a straight run to the line - coverted by Henri.
Straight from the kick off Chris Owen gathered the ball and beating several strong tackles fed Henri who sprinted his way to the line with a couple of hand offs against the brave last ditch scrambling defence of Towcester - converting his own try
Towcester did well from the kick off to force a line out in Kettering's half. However Alex King stole the throw for Kettering and the forwards rumbled a maul upfield - releasing the backs to send Henri clear again to complete his hat trick - this time unconverted.
Another bullocking charge from Dom Ferreira - well supported by Jamie Redden and Louis Childs saw Tasker Stables release Jess Clements for a speedy break to run in a try from forty metres - converted by Henri.
Despite the score lineTowcester refused to lie down and gamely attacked the Kettering line from the kick-off. A great attacking move was only stopped by a Towcester knock on. However Towcester showed great strength yet again to win the resulting scrum against the head -sending a man over on the crash ball to score a well worked try which was converted.
There was just enough time for Kettering to make one more attack, winning a line out and rolling a maul for Chris Owen to charge over for the final try of the game which was unconverted.
FINAL SCORE - TOWCESTRIANS 14 - KETTERING 60
Well done to the whole Kettering squad for a display of powerful running rugby. Still plenty to work at on the training field but a good start to the season.
