A tough lesson in team work

Our first ever cup match was against a side we have never played & could find little information about before the game. Two 25 mins & here's how it played out
First half:
We make a bit of a break to start but loose the ball in the breakdown, it's out to their winger & he is lightening & scores unopposed. Unfortunately Luton exploit our weakness down the wing & score two more in the same fashion. The boys seem quite stunned by this & we start to loose shape within the first ten minutes. We fight back hard & when we have ball in hand we look better. We work phases up the pitch. Luton get penalised in succession at the breakdown which is what we need. We win a scrum on their 5m line and get the ball to Freddie who scores & converts his own try. Unfortunately it's more of the same from Luton who have very good players in key positions but it's team work which mark them out. Two more tries before half time to them.
Second half:
The boys are feeling the pressure & we make small errors which Luton exploit & score again. Luton kick for touch & it's a driving maul over the line to score. The boys are fighting hard and Sam puts in a massive crunching tackle on their full back, we can't knock the boys commitment. We make another mistake at our own line out , Luton make the most of it & score again. Luton chip the ball through & we fumble & they re under the posts again.
A vary tough game today & not the easiest to report on. As coaches we feel the pain with the boys. We were beaten by a very well drilled team with some very talented players. There is no shame in being beaten by a good side.
I would have liked to of seen the boys galvanise into a team a bit more rather than try to beat them individually today. I imagine it was a bit of a shock to concede 3 tries in the first 6 mins. When we played with ball in hand we looked competitive & i'm sure if we had continued to do that the score would have been closer. Rugby is about beating the game in front of you & we just couldn't beat Lutons game today. They had a big centre who sucked in defenders but rather than try to crash through everyone offloaded the ball to their fly half who ran through the spaces. Beautiful rugby to be honest. They had a great game plan & executed it well. Unfortunately we didn't come up with the right answers. Lots to work on for us. Personally i would like to encourage our big ball carriers to off load more & our backs to have the faith to run with the ball & use each other more. Plenty to work on.
Tries: Freddie 1, Conversions: Freddie 1
