Tough day on the Road

It was looking like being a grim weather day away at Towcester but the sun shone through, we had the first team pitch to play on so it was ideal conditions for two 30min half’s of rugby. Here’s how it played out.
First Half:
Kettering catch & we we are away, we are straight into an arm wrestle which exactly where we did not want to be. A couple of mistakes & Tows are pressuring us, they drive over the line for a try & convert. We are struggling at the breakdown, Tows are very fast to the ruck & we are struggling to complete. Tows turn over the ball, out to the wing they score, no conversion. More pressure from Tows & we fumble on our line & Tows touch the ball down & convert. More pressure at the breakdown from Tows & they score again, no conversion. Tows in possession & out to the wing & they run in another one & convert. We are competing but we are too slow to support the ruck. Another breakaway & Tows score again & convert. End of the first half.
Second Half:
Again we lose possession & Tows score again & convert. Tows get the ball out to the big winger & he scores again, no conversion. The boys aren’t giving up & we are more competitive now, the forwards are punching through & the offloads are good. Ball out to Fraser & he scores, no conversion. Penalty to Kettering, hands in the ruck, strong work from the forwards. Ball out to Tom R & he’s over the line, try Kettering, no conversion. A combination now Tom R makes a break, good back up from the forwards, ball to Charlie who crashes through the defence but is stopped, good recycle & ball to Christian who scores, Fraser converts & thats time.
It makes tough reading but in the first half we got into a forwards battle & were dominated at the breakdown, we couldn’t get any rhythm to our play, we struggled to go forward. We asked the boys to face up at half time & try to win the second half which they did, much to their credit.
There was a lot of hard work & good play out there today by the boys. Max as captain led by example, he competed hard, Charlie, Alfie, Dan, Ewan & Will H crashed up where they could & rucked hard.Toby & Tom R made good breaks & lots of metres. Shea was an absolute menace & ripped plenty of balls. Will L-W never gave up or gave anything away, great shift from him. Ben, Christian & Oran led the backs well and put in some big shifts. The scrum half’s did everything they could under huge pressure. Clark & Sam hooked well in good scrums & their line outs were solid. The wingers had a good go with the service they did get. Too be honest they all gave it everything & we can’t ask for more than that. We were up against a well organised team. Lots to learn but it’s early in the season & these are the types of games that will push us further to become a better squad.
Tries: Fraser 1, Tom R 1 & Christian 1
Conversions: Fraser 1
