Blues win and remain unbeaten for a second year at the Saints Tournament

The Blues return to the Saints in an attempt to win the Tournament for the second year running After endless weeks of fair weather, autumn descended on the Saints Tournament with torrential rain and gale force winds. With 5x 20 minute games against some stiff competition, how would the Blues fair in such conditions.

Kettering opened the tournament playing Banbury who have for many years been a strong squad. The awful conditions hampered both sides with missed passes and knock ons galore. After a very stop start first half, the Blues found themselves with a scrum well into Banbury territory. The Blues unleashed Joe Steele who powered through the howling rain and the Banbury defence to to open the score.

The second half saw more mistakes by both sides, but Cale Celments joined the Kettering backs from full back, to take a switch pass before twisting and turning his way through the Banbury backs whilst having the strength to carry 2 players over the line to ground the ball to put Kettering two up. Banbury however capitalised on some slow retreating from a penalty by the Blues to crash over to give a final score of 10-5.

After more heavy rain Kettering faced Casuals who tackled well but ultimately Kettering's off loading ability meant we were able to rip through the opposition defence to score 6 unanswered tries by Cale Clements, Joe Steele (3), Theo Boreman, and Longshall. Kettering 30-0.

Yet again more wind and rain faced the boys for the Old Scouts game. Scouts proved a difficult team to break down and put in a gallant effort at the break down however Kettering started to find momentum with a great snipping run from the base of the scrum by Tom Church who side stepped the Scouts back line to open the Blues score. Tries from the Kettering back line now operating at closer range due to the conditions shortly followed with great scores by James Smith, Lucas and Tommy Sims. Kettering 20-0.

As the weather cleared, the Blues faced the only other unbeaten side on the day, our friends from Huntingdon. A squad who is getting better and better and growing in confidence. Both sides knew what was at stake and raised their game accordingly. A truly brilliant 20 minutes of rugby was unfolding with both sides giving their all, whilst cheered on by many a nervous coach and parent.

Each team generated chances only for the opposition to stop the advance and go again. Eventually Joe Steele found some space to run at the Stags, offloading to Tommy Sims who carried the ball so well to offload to Lucas just as the Huntingdon defence arrived. Likewise Lucas timed his pass to perfection to send James Smith into the corner. A superb try applauded by both sets of supporters.

Another break by Joe Steele tore through Huntingdon's tough defence to put Kettering 2 up. Stags however were not to be denied and some powerful running from a quickly taken kick off soon had Kettering on the back foot. Huntingdon recycled the ball well and pushed for the line. Kettering's best efforts to hold the ball up were thwarted as Huntingdon took the last score of the game. Kettering 10-5.

Kettering went into their last game against an always dangerous Towcester needing just a draw to take the tournament honours. Towcester certainly had the bit between their teeth and clearly were looking to upset Ketterings unbeaten record. The Blues ever growing penalty count was gifting Towcester far to much ball and opportunities but the Blues defence held firm. Kettering spurned a opportunity of a try with a knock-on and tension in the Blues was stating to mount. Further desperate tackles by the Blues kept Towcester out but the with time running out could Kettering hang on for the draw? Towcester went for glory with a kick and chase which just bounced out of play and gave Kettering the draw and the tournament win!

A total of 100 minutes rugby, but Kettering dug deep to score a total of 14 tries whilst only conceding 2. A memorable day for the boys with some tough competitive rugby played by all in the best of spirits despite some truly awful conditions.

As tournament winners Kettering were invited onto the pitch at the Saints v Saracens game afterwards where they received both medals and the first silverware of the Kettering juniors 2015/16 season.
