After the long summer break, a blue sky and some welcome sun awaited us at Market Harborough. A triangular fixture with Huntingdon joining us gave us the opportunity to see if all our training over the summer had paid off. 25 boys kitted out in their new TXM Recruit sponsored tops were all keen to get playing. However Market Harborough faced Huntingdon firrst in a closely matched game, where by MktH took two late tries to secure the first win of the day.
Huntingdon then faced Kettering and from the first kick, the Stags found themselves under relentless pressure conceding the first try in the opening minute. A powerful performance from all the Blues then unfolded, with the highlight being the support running and off-loading which was a joy to behold. Both forwards and backs mixing it up to score a total of 8 tries. The Stags however rallied near the end of the game to score late 2 tries of their own and a final score of 52-10 to Kettering.
Tries from Kettering, Cale Clements, Tommy Sims(2), Joe Steel(2), Lucas Bonsu, James Watters, Tom Lane and Austin Jackson.
Next up was MkH, who have always given us a tough game in previous encounters. As one of Leicestershire strongest sides, a stern test would await. Kettering received the first kick and took the game to the hosts with some powerful runs through the centre, to set up a break to the left, quick hands and more superb support running saw James Smith tackled 2 yards out, but not before he sent Tommy Sims flying down the touchline to open the score. 0-5 Kettering.
The MktH response was swift and Kettering soon found themselves defending on their line. Some desperate tackles saw the Blues hold their line before we found the time to clear the ball and turn the pressure back on the boys in Black. The Blues new scrum technique was also proving to cause no end of problems for MkH with Kettering taking control time after time, which gave us the platform to test the home sides defence repeatedly, until Aaron Clifford broke through to crash over the line and take the score to 0-10 Kettering.
Further pressure and the ability to keep the ball alive resulted in a further try from Henri Codling, whose outreached hand found the line despite the Harborough cover tackles. Try converted to take Kettering to a 0-17 lead a half time.
The second half saw the home side up their defensive game, despite all of the Blues possession and territory, Kettering were unable to add to the scoreline. Final score 0-17 Kettering.
A fantastic mornings rugby from the Blues, which included 3 new players, Theo, Tobais and Lucus, who also got his first try in a Blues top.
Finally, well done to Leon Pipe on the first TXM Recruit player of the week award, for a fantastic mornings rugby playing in the front row.
