And so the Blue Mean Machine rolled into Chelmsford to take on a home team proudly unbeaten all season. With a large squad of players they were keen to give Kettering a challenge and we owe a big thanks for accepting the fixture at late notice.
Once more I won't give a play by play account of the game here, just some highlights, and if you want to see the video just send an email to robwparkes@gmail.com (KRFC U14 parents only) and I will send you the link to the video on Dropbox. So here are the highlights, or as I have come to know them in the hazy aftermath of Neon Saturday , the Sorry Secret Seven.
The Sorry Secret Seven
1. Due to local regulations we were unable to play at Chelmsford RFC so many thanks to Boswells School for allowing us to use their secret facilities.Wouldn't say they were hard to find but I've never heard a Sat Nav swear before as we tried to locate the ground.
2. Before I go on I can only apologise for any damage caused to the school sand pit through what I can only allude to here as Hop, Skip and JumpGate. For those who witnessed my efforts to break the world triple jump record (Hungover Games version) I can only apologise....my trousers don't usually let me down so catastrophically. For those of you who didn't see it, the resulting injury to my camera hand will explain the video nasty that I produced of what was an epic game.
3. I'd also like to apologise again to the South African gentleman who joined us on the touchline for the second half. Contrary to the song I really have met several very nice South Africans.
4. Also a quick apology to my son Tom for my comment on yesterday's video about his kicking prowess. Whilst we can't all be Jonny Wilkinson I hope the picture accompanying this article shows what I really think about you. Now will you give me the keys back to my bl**dy car?
5. I think that's enough apologising so I will summarise each half of the game in a few words. 1st half - BLUE WAVE = KETTERING SCORE 40 UNANSWERED POINTS. 2nd half - CHELMSFORD COMEBACK = 12 POINTS TO NONE. A game of 2 halves and classic tour stuff as the boys started to tire in the second half as late nights, and a tackling display of titanic dimensions in the first half took their toll. But taking nothing away from Chelmsford - who were skillfull and well drilled opponents who made us raise our game to produce flashes of excellence. Good luck for your season decider against Southend - what a game that will be.
FINAL SCORE - CHELMSFORD 12 - KETTERING 40.
6. And a final catering comment - although we weren't at the Chelmsford clubhouse the home parents did their club proud sharing a magnificent mountain of cupcakes and doughnuts with us after the game. Now that's what I call post-match recovery.
7. And one final apology...sorry we couldn't make it to the pub for a post match drink - we heard it was next to Chelmsford prison and there was a danger of a mass break-in from several KRFC parents to avoid going back to Clacton. Sorry. Next time you're in Kettering we owe you a shandy or two at Waverley Road.
A word of thanks to everybody at KRFC 2015 tour organising committee for an absolutely brilliant 2015 tour - most of your hard work goes unseen but it is never unappreciated. A massive shout out (sponsored by Don King and Craig Stiles) to the U14 coaching dream team Bill, Jon, Matt and Mirin - you've built a team that is great on the pitch and hopefully even better off it! Thanks to Sarah Bennett as well for taking on the thankless task of team tour co-ordinator. And finally thanks to the boys (and lifetime honorary team member Ellie Adcock) for letting us watch you play rugby.
That's all folks...thanks for reading...for those of you who enjoyed this report I'm the KRFC U14 Director of Connumications and will offer bacon in exchange for World Cup Rugby tickets, preferably in a box near half way if possible, with a cold beer and some cheesy wotsits. For those of you who didn't enjoy this report try ping-pong.
