KRFC U15s got off to the perfect start to the season with a hard fought 35-33 win over Oundle U15s.
Oundle had soundly beaten Kettering twice last season so there was a nervous air to the start of the game and it showed as Oundle took an early lead. However, Kettering regrouped well and came storming back with a try from Jake Lewington, converted by Arthur Jones.
It was a pretty brutal game with some Kettering players having to take time out to recover before heroicly taking to the field again.... most notably Luke Benson who twisted his knee; Jake Lewington who was badly winded being tackled and Chris Gosling who, again, decided to headbutt an opponents set of studs!!
The score see-sawed throughout the match until Kettering managed to get to two tries ahead later in the second half.
However, Oundle came back to within 2 points with their final try of the game 10 minutes from time. This led to a nerve shredding final few minutes as Oundle were camped on the Kettering try line and went over several times.... but each time the referee declared that the ball had been held up. Kettering defended magnificently to hold out for the confidence boosting win.
It was a thoroughly deserved win for Kettering and shows how far the team have come.
Man Of The Match was awarded to Dale Sanderson on his debut - not only for KRFC but also to the game of rugby.
DOTD was awarded to Jake Lewington for being so selfish in scoring all 5 tries!
