Following a close win away at Casuals we expected another close battle with St Ives. They where out to beat us after our win on their patch in the league at the start of the season. The first half was quite disjointed with several breaks in play for injuries however St Ives found their way into the game more quickly and built a lead. We responded well with a fluid backs move scored by Tareeq Manji and at half time where 5:10 down. After some half-time changes and rousing speeches from the coaching staff we put in a fantastic display of direct forward play in the second half. This was great to see as Phil York has worked tirelessly with the forwards and today much of it clicked.
The forwards work was complimented with solid defense from the backs and good attacks when opportunities came. Tries scored by Ryan Hendry and Callum York with a vital conversion from Oliver Bosworth saw us leading 17:10. We had created many more scoring opportunities which where not taken. St Ives attacked with the final play of the match and scored - fortunately the backs forced them wide and they where unable to convert. The final score 17:15.
The team have worked hard this season, sometimes not getting the results they might have and it was a great finish to 2013 completing a double over St Ives and getting two wins on the bounce.
Some special mentions: Callum York had a fantastic second half after returning from injury and Matthew Patterson in only his second game back was very solid at fullback and taking us repeatedly over the gain line from counterattacks. Ryan Hendry was awesome today being really destructive in the loose with his driving play and rewarded by a try. Finally James 'The Ginger Wall' Moreton. James Moreton epitomised the teams attitude today: St Ives tried running around him and running through him but 'The Ginger Wall' said "No!" He gave a great defensive performance and was unlucky not to score.
We will certainly go into 2014 on a high. Well done boys!
