A try in the last minute of the game secured the league points for Wellingborough in an otherwise close and tense affair at Cut Throat Lane.
Both sides did well to play with the skill and control that they did in what can only be described as appalling weather conditions for a game of rugby. Credit should also be given to the officials and supporters who also endured lashing rain and wind for much of the game.
Kettering played with the wind behind them in the first half yet despite some early pressure did not manage to cross the Wellingborough line leaving the match scoreless at half time.
As the wind and rain abated a little during the second half the game opened up with Wellingborough scoring first. Kettering replied with two Luke Conyard tries, either side of a second Borough try, and has often been the case in recent weeks, Conyard’s pace and power was simply too much for the defense as he ran in from 30 plus meters in both cases to score.
With the scores locked at 10-10 it looked very much as if the two rivals would share the points however; with just a minute to go Wellingborough pounced on a Kettering error and their forwards forced their way over the line.
After the game Kettering forwards coach Phil York commented; “I was pleased with our performance in difficult conditions but felt that if we had maintained the work rate that we showed for spells in the second half that we would have run out as the eventual winners”.
Scores: Luke Conyard – tries (44 and 56 minutes)
Higham Flat Roofing Man of the match was Kettering No.13 Luke Conyard
