Despite their best performance of the season Kettering Colts lost by 3 tries to 4, to a strong and well drilled Buckingham side in The East Midlands League at Waverley Road on Saturday.
Kettering opened the scoring through Captain Alex Bayley and remained ahead until just before the interval. The young blues, with the wind at their backs, dominated both territory and possession throughout the half and should really have been further ahead if they had been a little more clinical in the red zone and conceded fewer penalties.
In the second half Buckingham started the stronger and took the lead (5-12) within just a few minutes but a solo run from Luke Conyard, which started in his own half, put Kettering back in to the game. Much of the second half the game remained both close and tense until Buckingham scored two tries in quick succession (10-24). Despite being two scores behind Kettering fought back and finally, after some sustained pressure on the Buckingham line, Alex Bayley burst over for his second try of the afternoon.
Commenting after the game, Head Coach, Graham Wilson said; “This was good Colts performance despite the score. I am really pleased with the endeavor and enthusiasm that we showed today. We gave away far too many penalties for my liking but that is something we can work on at training next week ahead of the local derby with Wellingborough.”
Scores: Alex Bayley – tries (18 and 68 minutes), Luke Conyard – try (55 minutes)
