Colts v Leighton Buzzard

The colts made the long trip down to Leighton Buzzard on the back of a good victory against Vipers last week.

The conditions were not great for free flowing passing rugby but both sides certainly entertained despite the wind and slope. Buzzard, playing with the wind in the first half, where first to trouble the scorers with a pair of penalty kicks after some robust defence from Kettering had kept them out for the first quarter. Kettering where struggling for territory kicking against the wind but started to run the ball with forwards carrying and driving well, making good ground. Grubber kicks in and behind Buzzard were turning the defence and from one of these broken periods of play Oliver Bosworth chased through well and grounded for a try after pressure from the Kettering backs forced the error. Conversion added from just to the left of the posts. Buzzard had added a further five points when Kettering's wide defence was found short of numbers leaving the scores 11:7 at half time.

Changing ends and Kettering attacked with the wind but uphill. Some entertaining rugby was played by both sides with Kettering the next to score. Ethan Haywood breaking up the right flank and gathering his own kick ahead to cross. Oliver Bosworth adding the extra two.

Buzzard kept playing and forced some territory of their own eventually crossing for a second try in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Final score 18:14.

The coaches remarked on some real positives from the Kettering performance, a dominant scrum, good disruption of the opposition line out and a strong defensive performance from the backs. The backs performance even more notable given that they only had one backs replacement and several people playing out of preferred positions.
