The second outing for the Blues Colts in the U18 EM Premiership had them entertaining local rivals Wellingborough at Waverly Road.
Wellingborough started brightly with good ball retention and making ground with quick hands and pace in the back-line. Kettering where still in the changing room. Two tries in the first quarter and the Blues Colts where already 0:12 down, second best on the score board and distinctly out of favour with the Referee.
The second quarter saw Kettering start to play, the phases and set piece started to work and although Wellingborough scored a 3rd try. Kettering began to peg them back on the score board picking up two tries of their own with Dalton Varley and Dannell Frometa both making it over the try line.
Half-time was blown and the score 10:17 to the visitors.
What was said at half-time only the players and coaching staff will ever know.
The sides swapped ends and playing styles, Kettering making good yards with forward drives, and spinning the ball out during phase play, eventually the Wellingborough defense was broken down by strong running from centre Tom Connolly. Further good play saw Dalton Varley dive over for his second with a conversion from Tareeq Manji.
Now Kettering where showing some self belief taking the lead at 22:17.
The final quarter saw good attack and defense from both sides but only the Blues troubled the scorers. Tom Connolly breaking through for his second and in the final few minutes, Tom Abbott scoring with a conversion added by Tareeq Manji.
Final score 34:17.
Manager Andy Swinburne was pleased to finally have a pint brought for him by the Wellingborough management as he has been buying their beer for the last 5 years! It was rumoured but hotly disputed that forwards coach Phil York even broke out a smile.
