The Blues Colts entertained Olney in a hastily arranged friendly after Oundle where unable to raise a team. Good dry conditions for rugby on a pleasant autumn day and a good many fresh faces in the starting line up. Today was a chance for some first run outs of the season for a number of the colts squad. The Blues Colts appeared to have learned some lessons from last weeks defeat at Derby, there was more snap and focus about the pre-match warm up and Kettering started well. Strong running through the middle of the park and then well recycled ball moved to the left wing for Dannell Frometa to scoot over with the extra 2 added by Sam Zeller.
The Blues Colts continued the good work with direct running and phase play, notable strong carries from Joseph Clarke, well directed from captain Tom Connolly who was soon over for a try of his own, again, with the extras from Sam Zeller.
Olney where getting into the game now and pressed hard but concerted defence from the Colts held them out. Into the second quarter and Kettering were again clear through with Luke Conyard outpacing the defence for his first of the day. Sam Zeller adding the extras again.
Half-time 21:0
Olney troubled the scorers for the first time, shortly after half-time getting a 5 pointer, after the Kettering defence lost some shape and extra numbers where found outside. The Blues responded again. Tom Connolly, with an outside break, hand-off and pace down the left wing scoring near the touchline. A tricky kick but 4 from 4 for Sam Zeller.
The visitors upped their game as Kettering seemed to relax and scored two further unconverted tries. The final quarter and a further 2 scores for Luke Conyard racking up his hat-trick for the game. The second with a what an Olney spectator called a 'filthy side-step' leaving two defenders on the floor and him clear away down the left wing. Oliver Bosworth stepping up for the final score of the game with another difficult conversion from near the left touchline.
Final score 40:15
The coaches remarked after the game 'a good result although we certainly didn't play to the best of our ability today'
