The Blues Colts took on the long trip to Derby with a much changed team sheet. However what didn't change was the poor early start. The coaches remarked after the game that for three weeks running a poor start and lack of concentration during pre-match time allowed the opposition to build a lead.
Playing on the first team pitch in bright sunny conditions the Derby side began well. Using good drives from the pack and crisp passing in the backs Kettering where stretched defensively in the first quarter. Derby going a try up early on. The Blues however picked up to the pace of game and with the first piece of controlled possession and territory came away with a 5 pointer of their own from Callum York.
Derby continued to play with a mixed game of driving forward phases followed by moving the ball wide at pace and before half time a further two tries came.
19:5 at Half-time.
Into the 3rd quarter and Luke Conyard broke through and sped around the cover twice in 10 minutes with Derby scoring a try of their own between his brace. With the score now poised at 24:17 there was still only a single score between the teams. Derby brought back on some of their key players clearly not happy with the game being still so close.
Into the final quarter and Derby finally forced a further try only to be pulled back by another Kettering score from Owen Stanger. With what seemed like 5 minutes remaining the scores where close at 29:22. Kettering where playing well now, causing turnovers and making good ground towards the Derby try line. Breaking through the middle and with an overlap outside, came the turning point - a knock on by a Derby player reaching to try and stop the pass was adjudged by a possibly unsighted referee to have been a Kettering knock on. Scrum Derby. A technical infringement at the ensuing scrum allowed the Blues a further play and again good play took them deep into the Derby 22 before a chip ahead was caught and marked allowing Derby to clear to touch and claim the cup tie.
Final score 29:22
