Colts show good character to edge out Syston at Waverly Road and earn a 3rd round home draw v Bedford in the 3rd round.

From the off KRFC colts were up for the task which was a good job as Syston had come to play, particularly the pack. The game started with an error from Syston giving Kett's the opportunity to apply pressure however were unable to convert the possession into a score.

Syston composed themselves and through a series of pick and drives worked their way up to the blues 22 with real purpose however strong defensive pressure forced a turn over which Conor Featherstone gathered and decided to run it back at Syston.

Simms feed the ball on to Josh Luthayi who worked his magic and beat a couple of defenders with some great foot work before offloading to Ashley Marshall at full tilt who showed a clean pair of heels to the defence touching down under the posts. Harry Brightwell adding the extras.

The half continued in similar vain, both sides working hard and putting in some big tackles with Haydn McCann taking a blow to the head which kept him out of the rest of the game. The first half ended 7:0 to the home side.

The second half seen Syston gain control at scrum time and on a few occasions had the Blues pack going in reverse which isn't what we've come to expect. After 5 minutes a quick reshuffle seen Joey Magill move to 7, Featherstone to 9, Furniss came on at 10 and Allen at 12.

Syston continued to up the auntie and managed to cross the line getting it back to 7:5 demonstrating they only had one thing on there mind winning. The intensity continued and when Syston took the ball into touch Featherstone took a quick line out which released Furniss to run at the defence with real purpose and with some good handling the Blues were eventually bumbled into touch just short of the line.

Blues stole the line out and after a couple of phases created a driving maul with Rory Napier well positioned to use his power to help drive the maul over the line. Josh Clubley emerged from the bottom of the pile with a wide smile having touched down for the Blues. Brightwell converted taking the score to 14:5.

To Syston's credit they didn't lie down and after a few strong runs were rewarded with an excellent try out wide though were unable to convert the extra's. At 14:10 the game was in the balance with about 10 minutes to go. The Blues didn't panic and again took the game to Syston through the middle of the park creating an opportunity for the back line to run at Syston which this time they executed with aplomb and Whitehead scored in the corner.

At the final whistle Kettering won out 19:10 in a well contested physical game with Conor Featherstone earning man of the match.

Well done Kett's.
