Kettering started brightly enough and following a series of rucks Kettering flanker Reece Coles was on hand to touch the ball down over the Wellingborough line. Wellingborough added a penalty and then caught Kettering off guard as they took a quick penalty and ran in a try from halfway.
Kettering continued to press and dominated much of the first half play however, they were unable to add to their points tally (5-10 at half-time).
The second half was all together different as Wellingborough controlled much of the territory and possession. On a sticky, wet pitch Kettering did not help themselves as they conceded far too many penalties and any territorial advantage that they gained was soon lost as Wellingborough kicked the penalty in to touch and won the lineout. In the final analysis it was the heavy penalty count that cost the home side.
Credit to Wellingborough who played the conditions well.
Kettering will now have to beat Daventry (away) to secure a play-off position.
Scores: Reece Coles (try – 4 minutes)
