A late penalty from Harry Brightwell gave Kettering Colts a narrow victory

Kettering Colts progressed to the next round of the National Colts Plate with a 22 points to 19 victory over Towcester.

Kettering Colts started brightly with Calum Whithead opening the scoring with a well worked move and new boy Steve Farrow scoring on his debut to give the home side a comfortable lead. After which Kettering Colts seemed to sit back and allow Towcester in to the game (14-5 at half time).

Towcester were first on to the score board in the second half with a converted try of their own before lock Jack Brown scored in the corner to keep Kettering Colts ahead but with five minutes remaining Towcester scored an excellent try to draw the scores level. With no extra time and the try count level it looked as if a draw would be good enough to take the away side through to the next round however, an infringement by Towcester gave Harry Brightwell a shot at goal. The Kettering number 10 sent the penalty through the middle of the posts and Kettering edged their way in to the next round.

After the game Kettering Captain Tom Allen gave an honest account of his side’s performance. “We just did enough to get the victory but we all agreed after the game that we can do a good deal better. We are through to the next round and look forward to an away trip to either Scunthorpe or BBOB.”

Scores: Calum Whitehead (try - 16 minutes), Harry Brightwell (conversion), Steve Farrow (try – 24 minutes), Harry Brightwell (conversion) Jack Brown (try – 62 minutes), Harry Brightwell (penalty)

The Global Group Man of the Match was Kettering No.6 Freddie Morris
