A large crowd at Waverley Road were treated to an excellent spectacle as Kettering Colts were left wondering what might have been if only they had not allowed their visitors, from Nottinghamshire, to build a 17 point lead.
Paviours started strongly and dominated much of the early play. The visitors opened the scoring with a driving lineout and looked very much in control during the opening quarter. Harry Brightwell added a penalty for The Colts and then either side of half-time the home side conceded three tries.
At 3-20 many sides would have given up but clearly this years Colts have some real inner belief and over a period of 20 minutes they staged the most dramatic comeback. Jack Brown started the ball rolling as he was driven over by the rest of his forwards following a series of rucks close to the Paviours line. Harry Brightwell added the conversion and then he was on target again with a penalty kick.
With 10 minutes to go, the score at 13-20 and Kettering very much in the ascendency this was always going to be a close finish. Four minutes from time The Colts won a lineout ball 20 meters out and drove Paviours over their own line as Jamie Manley touched down. Harry Brightwell slipped as he ran up to take the conversion and the kick missed.
Kettering continued to pile on the pressure and a clever break in midfield by Brightwell set up a one on one with the Paviours full-back. The number 10 kicked the ball and as he sprinted to the line he was taken out by a Paviours player. The referee carded the player and awarded Kettering a penalty. The normally reliable Brightwell pushed the kick just wide of the uprights.
