Kettering 4's always knew this would be a tough, physical match up, and they were not disappointed.
Both teams came out firing and strong forward play produced little movement down the field initially, but prolonged pressure from Kettering started to yield results and spent much of the first quarter in the Bedford half. A surge for the try-line from Cavan Treanor ended in a knock on over the line.
A quick counter attack followed by a deft kick and a good bounce allowed the Swifts fly-half to break free and open the scoring with a converted try.
After that, it became a bit of a stalemate, with both sides playing strong defensively, but the Bedford forwards had managed to gain the upper hand in the scrum and line out and scored another converted try and a penalty as the first half ended, 0-20.
Kettering came out in the second half with a renewed purpose. They dug deep and managed to sure up the scrum and rucks. This began to frustrate Bedford and penalties began to creep into their game. After a short spell of attacking their line, Ben Adcock broke through to open the Kettering account.
Once again, both teams entered a defensive lock out, trading tackles. However, in the dying minutes, a quick penalty opened space for Rob Tilley who ran in a score and converted on the whistle.
Phil "The Judge" Aldridge presided over the post game awards:
Man of the Match: James Denny
Chunder Wonder: Ben Adcock
D#?k of the Day: Mark Taylor (for a terrible hair cut)
A big thanks to the referee for his time and effort this weekend. Also to Bedford Swifts who provided a great game and a good barometer for the rest of our league fixtures. To Damo Adcock, Craig McLundie, and Nick Thomatos, who all put in a great effort for Bedford who were a couple of players short. And finally to the entire 4's team, who played their hearts out in that second half.
