With Kettering RFC fielding six sides this weekend, it was always going to be tough selection wise, but with a few calls to friends, previous players, and kidnapping ASBO (who dug his own grave by bringing his boots), the team rallied.
The first half was dominated by Kettering. Solid phases from the forwards created space for the backs allowing Kyle McGregor and Matt Winspear over the line.
The continued pressure then opened gaps for the forwards with first Vince Stimpson and then Cavan Treanor powering through the Men's Own defense to score. A moments indecision, behind his own touch line, by the opposition 10 allowed Ben Adcock to get hold of him, forcing him to spill the ball which was pounced upon by Tom Dickinson.
Then, in a fantastic solo effort from the half way line, Rob Tilley broke through their line to run one in under the posts.
Men's Own were suffering their own selection issues but came out in the second half with some refreshed legs from some late arrivals. Some strong running from their new 10, started to open gaps down the line and the steadily marched down the field for a try.
Kettering tried to rally but were playing off the back foot and mistakes started to creep in to their game. A couple of penalties had the opposition camped on our try line again and some excellent forward work created another try.
After the restart, Kettering managed to find their feet again, and started to attack, but Men's Own were very equal to the task. However, a steady progression created enough room for Rob Tilley to put his second on the scoreboard.
Men's Own then came straight back and scored again, and after the restart marched solidly down the field once more. But a solid defensive stand ran out the clock, and forced a penalty from Men's Own for the ball to kicked into touch.
Phil "The Judge" Aldridge then presided over the post game awards:
Man of the Match: Rob Tilley
First senior game: Cavan Treanor, Kyle McGregor, James MacPherson
D#?k of the Day: Mark Taylor
A great big thank you and well done goes to Men's Own 3's, who never dropped their heads and gave us a great game, as well as being gracious hosts. Also a thank you Cavan, Kyle, James, ASBO, and Vince, for choosing to spend their Saturday with the likes of us. To Hollie Latham for taking the fantastic photos. And last, but definitely not least, to The Judge for helping out Men's Own in first half.
Next Saturday see's Kettering host Bedford Swifts 2's in their first league game.
