The visitors started strongly and put the Blues under significant pressure from the kick off. This led to 2 early penalties to give them a 6-0 lead. The Blues began to come to terms with the game, and eventually after concerted pressure on the Syston line, the ball was moved left and Jordan Butiln scored wide out. Shane Ling added the extra's with an excellent conversion to give the Blues the lead.
As the half moved on, Syston's dominance in the scrum was telling, and the referee somehow missed the blatantly deliberate wheel by the Syston pack and awarded them a penalty try, to see them leading 13-7 at the break. The visitors had certainly held the upper hand in the first half and deserved to lead, but there was little difference between the sides, and playing back to the clubhouse, the Blues set about their task with a great deal of enthusiasm.
However, the visitors are not champions for nothing, and their defence was proving difficult, indeed impossible, to break down. As the half wore on cracks began to appear, but then with the Blues pressing, a grubber kick through by Ben Dawson, bounced up off one of the Syston centre's knees, straight into the hands of their right winger, who ran 80 metres to score the decisive try, completely against the run of play.
The visitors then shut up shop and gleefully celebrated their win at the end of the game. We can only wish them good luck in National League 3 next season, and look to improve in the areas where we were found wanting in this game.
