The 3 things that the Blues can take from this game are that they achieved their aims of scoring a minimum of 4 tries, they conceded none and they came away from a game played in the most appalling conditions with no further injuries.
The fact the game ever took place is remarkable as is the standard of play maintained by both sides as conditions rapidly deteriorated and ball carriers became unable to distinguish teammates from opponents.
Indeed, had the Blues not changed their shirts at half-time the game would probably have ended in a comedy of errors, and made the referee's job an impossible one.
The Blues dominated the game for long periods, and led 14-0 at the break following 2 tries from prop Joshua Cox and 2 conversions from fly half Andy Byrne.
Despite the conditions there was some excellent handling and support from the visitors, whilst the home side made their best territorial gains from driven mauls, often containing 12 or 13 players.
The 2nd half saw Kettering pull clear after a few nervous minutes when Spaldings unquestionable efforts almost saw them break through and reduce the deficit.
Firstly Joe Newman scored, with Byrne again converting, and then the fly half scored a try himself, to which he added the extra points, before Steve Fraher burst clear to score the final try, and Byrne added the extra's for a 100% kicking record in those testing conditions.
Spalding never gave up, and at the end had the Blues under severe pressure only for Kettering to turn the ball over and break clear for what looked like a certain 6th try, until Matt Nield succumbed to the elements and lost the ball, or bar of muddy soap, whilst in the clear and racing for the line.
