The Blues started badly when trying to run the ball out of defence too many times and Bosworth capitalised to score a converted try to lead after less than 5 minutes. Joe Daniel, whose kicking was exceptional, reduced the lead with a well struck penalty and then Andy Byrne crossed for a fine try which had excellent handling and then a dummy from the Blues outside half saw him cross near the posts. Daniel converted to give the Blues the lead.
At this point Kettering were dominant and they should have had at least 3 points, when a break from Jan Rennard was halted under the home posts, and the Bosworth centre dived in from the wrong side to prevent an almost certain score. The referee, however, deemed a penalty was sufficient and then to make matters worse, the penalty was taken quickly and the score by Steve Fraher rules out by the unsighted referee.
Bosworth then took advantage and scored a 2nd converted try, before Daniel added another penalty, only for the home side to extend the lead to 17-13 near the break. With half-time approaching a 3rd Daniel penalty closed the gap to a single point.
The 2nd half was equally as tight, as firstly a Matt Nield try saw the Blues regain the lead, only for the hosts to be awarded a penalty try for an infringement at a lineout. The hosts were then again fortunate to only be penalised when a deliberate knock-on less than 5-metres from their line, once again only resulted in a penalty to the Blues, and they then blew another chance of 3 points when taking a quick tap 5-metres out and straight in front of the home posts, only to mess it up with a forward pass!
Just as it looked as though these decisions would prove costly, a quickly taken drop out by the Bosworth centre saw him inexplicably pass the ball straight to Ben Street who ran in unopposed under the posts to give a 28-24 lead back to Kettering, with only 5 minutes remaining on everyone bar the referee's clock.
As the game entered injury time and Bosworth pressing hard, a strike against the head saw them drive towards the Blues line. The referee clearly saw something amiss and awarded Bosworth their 2nd penalty try of the game, which appeared to have finally determined who won? However, the referee then played a further 5 minutes and with the last play of the game, awarded the Blues a penalty just shy of the halfway line. Daniel stepped up, hit the ball true and straight and cleared the bar by several meters to tie the game, at 31-31!
