For 30 minutes the game remained scoreless, and the Lions had the majority of the play, without causing the Blues too many scares, before Monty Toseland opened the scoring for Kettering in support of a quick tap penalty from Joe Daniel, which caught the Rugby defence unaware. Daniel added the extra's and Kettering led 7-0 after 3/4 of the half.
Lions hit back and kicked a penalty on 35 minutes to close the gap to 4 points. 7-3
The score remained the same as the half-time whistle sounded.
Daniel then kicked a penalty on 45 minutes as Kettering slowly began to take control of the game, without ever seeing off the Lions until the final minutes. 10-3.
The Blues pressure in defence was starting to cause the visitors to make mistakes, and Jordan Butlin capitalised on one such error to hack through, with Josh Plowright beating the winger to the ball to score to Blues second try on 55 minutes. Daniel converted to leave the score 17-3 with 25 minutes to go.
Again Rugby fought back and they were rewarded with an unconverted try of their own on 58 minutes. 17-8.
With 10 minutes on the clock Kettering finally pulled away. Firstly, skipper George Newman barged his way over for the 3rd try, with Daniel again converting. 24-8
3 minutes later, Daniel scored himself, after good hands and a fine break from Plowright. The conversion was missed as the Blues stretched their lead and secured the 4 try bonus point on 73 minutes. 29-8.
The final score was a real beauty. The Blues won a number of phases before Daniel, filling in at the 10 slot, spotted debutant, Cameron Sharp in space wide on the right wing. Daniels crossfield kick was inch perfect and the flying Sharp caught the ball on the full and crossed the whitewash wide out on the right to cap off a fine display for the young back. 34-8
Final Score: Kettering 34 - 8 Rugby Lions
