With the game in doubt due to heavy rainfall the previous day, the pitch turned out to be remarkably good considering, although the significant amount of sand on it made it feel like falling on sandpaper in places.
The hosts began the game strongly and, playing down the slope with the wind at their backs, pinned the Blues back in their 22 for much of the first quarter. Eventually Kettering made their way upfield and began to take control, and after a period of concerted pressure, Jordan Butlin scored wide out on the left. Bruce Keir converted excellently, and then extended the Blues advantage to 10 points with a simple penalty.
As the half drew to a close Drinfield again pressurised the Blues line, but the visitors defence held firm and the shoreline remained 10-0 at the break.
If Kettering thought they had done their job, they quickly had to think again, as the hosts kept coming. Added to this the deteriorating conditions and the mounting error count made the Blues job even more difficult, and it became more so when the hosts kicked a penalty to close the gap to seven points after 50 minutes.
The Blues continued to press and eventually Steve Fraher scored from close range, and Keir again added an excellent conversion to seemingly finish the hosts off.
How wrong can you be? Firstly Alfie Ayears was yellow carded and Dronfield took full advantage to score a converted try, and then Bruce Keir joined Ayears in the bin to leave the visitors clinging on to the lead. Despite their efforts Dronfield could not find a way through and the Blues held firm to take a very valuable four points away from a battling Dronfield side.
