Kettering entertained the Christmas lunch crowd with a festival of running rugby, despite the poor weather conditions, which saw persistent rain throughout the game.

The Blues made a great start and Steve Fraher opened the scoring from close range, with his try converted by Harry Owens after just 2 minutes.
The players were taking time to adjust to the wet conditions and mistakes were made by both sides. Eventually, Melton Mowbray replied with a penalty after 20 minutes which was quickly cancelled out by an Owens penalty, making up for 2 previous misses, as the Blues seven point lead was regained.
Then cam a significant score as some fine handling through a number of phases, eventually led to DAn Ireland crashing over for a converted try, to extend the lead to fourteen points, and when Joe Newman found a gap in the defence, right on half-time, the centre made no mistake to score near the posts and make Owens conversion a simple task. The Blues now led 24-3 and were well in command.
An Owens penalty on 47 minutes extended the lead still further and then Alex Bayley scored the all important fourth try, to ensure the home side secured the four try bonus point.
This was another significant moment as the visitors ill discipline led to a yellow card, which was increased to a red when the offending player continued to argue his point. with the score now 32-3, and down to 14 players for the rest of the game, there was no way back for Melton.
A penalty try soon followed, which Owens converted, but to their great credit, the visitors didn't give up and their best player, the fullback gained just reward for his efforts with a converted score, which reduced the arrears to 39-10 on sevety-five minutes.
The Blues fought back and a further penalty from Owens, as the players seemed to think it was last play increased the gap again, and then a fine run down the left wing by Damo Conyard saw him outflaank the cover defence and run round under the posts for the final try of the game, converted by Owens, to put the finishing touches on an excellent team performance, and leave the scoreline an emphatic 49-10.
