Last minute heartbreak for Blues

Bedford Ath maintained their dominance of Midlands 1East, with a last minute try to deny the Blues their victory

as has been the case in virtually every game between these two sides in the past few years, this game was as tight as it could have been and in the end came down to accuracy and endurance.
The first half was peppered with errors, as the difficult conditions led to numerous kicking and line out mistakes from both sides. One significant moment came when Tom Spencer was inexplicably yellow carded for an alleged stamp on the visiting scrum-half (no more to be said on that one), and with the extra man Bedford Ath scored the only points of the half through a penalty.
Although the wind was across the pitch it still, as usual, slightly favoured the side kicking towards the clubhouse and restored to a full compliment, the Blues started the 2nd period strongly.
The pressure eventually told when a line out catch and drive resulted in an unconverted try for Shane Ling, as the Blues took the lead, which was maintained until the very last minutes of the game. Indeed, with Ath reduced to 14 for the last 15 minutes, following a red card, the home side should have wrapped things up, when a great drive at a 5-metre scrum saw them visitors driven back over their line only for the ball to evade Tom Spencer and a golden chance to clinch the points went astray.
The Blues were still in the lead, and under no threat, but then gave the ball away, and to make matters worse, failed, for the first time in the match, to re-organise defensively. Ath are not at the head of the table for nothing, and they took full advantage, broke through the disorganised home defence and scored under the posts, to snatch the win from the Blues grasp.
The Blues play a re-arranged home league game this weekend, against Old Laurentians, with a 2.15ko, followed by the Calcutta Cup game, Scotland v England.
