Blues turn it on at home

Kettering came to life on Saturday and overpowered Old Scouts with a fine display of running rugby, which resulted in a 53-8 win.

The Blues started strongly and Jordan Butlin scored an unconverted try after 5 minutes when some excellent handling put the winger clear.
Scouts quickly reduced the arrears when the home side conceded a penalty straight from the kick off and the visitors kicker made no mistake.
It wasn't long before another piece of fine handling saw Josh Luthayi dive over in the right corner for the Blues second unconverted try. The visitors were looking at ways of stopping the Blues pulling clear and an unsavoury late tackle followed by a flurry of punches led to a lenient yellow card for the Scouts open-side, with George Newman joining him for getting involved in an off the ball incident with the same player.

More or less straight after this unsavoury incident the Scouts loosehead prop joined his team-mate in the bin for preventing Ben Hanger benefitting from a quickly taken penalty. Down to 13, the visitors conceded a third try on 20 minutes when Butlin dummied his way over for his second try of the afternoon. Joe Daniels conversion was this time successful to stretch the lead to 17-3, and then the full-back scored himself when further precise handling gave him enough room to race in from the 22 and score under the posts. With his conversion added the Blues had a healthy 24-3 lead at the break.

The game was effectively over after 5 minutes of the second half when Conor Horgan received an offload from Tom Bridgeman to charge through from 30 metres, for the Blues fifth try. However, Scouts came back and their full-back scored an excellent individual try to give them some glimmer of hope. But this was to be their last score as Ben Hanger benefitted from his tenacity at the base of the scrum as forward pressure told on the visitors and Hanger pounced on the loose ball to score. Daniel added the extra's to open up a 36-8 lead on 48 minutes.

Alex Linnell was in support of a Bruce Keir break to dive over for the next try, which Daniel again converted.

Horgan had the last say, as he scored his second try, again in support of some fine handling, to romp home from 25 metres before the 2nd row capped of a great individual and team display to score his hat-trick try and earn his second consecutive RAJ Man of the Match award, albeit shared with Bridgeman this week.

This weekend the Blues travel to Rugby for the 2nd time in a couple of weeks, this time to take on Old Laurentians, who have a torrid start to the season, and will be looking to turn things around very quickly.
