Kettering opened the season with win over visitors Newark RFC, as 4 tries in the 2nd half saw them pull clear for a convincing, bonus point victory.

Joe Daniel opened the Blues account with a 5th minute penalty, and then added the extra's to a try from debutant, Alex Bayley on 15 minutes. Despite dominating much of the rest of the half, the Blues failed to add to this and the teams changed round with the home side leading 10-0.

The 2nd half started well for the Blues, and Josh Luthayi outflanked the defence for an unconverted try before new captain, Tom Bridgeman crashed over after 50 minutes, to score near the posts and make Daniel's conversion a simple task, to give the Blues a 22-0 lead.

Newark came back strongly and the Blues had to show great resilience to prevent the visitors from opening their account, before Steve Fraher burst through, performed a less than elegant "Ben Cohen" dive into the right hand corner to put the game beyond Newark, and secure the 4 try bonus point, on 67 minutes. Daniel's difficult conversion attempt drifted wide, but he was on target with his final, much easier effort, when converting his own try in the 70th minute, after a fine break from RAJ Man of the Match, Bruce Keir, had put the Blues full back in the clear for a try under the posts.

The scoreline at the end was a convincing 34-0 win for the Blues, who know they will have to be more clinical and even more resilient in their defensive efforts if they are to come away with anything from next weekends game at Newbold, after the Warwickshire sides thumping 70 point win over Ilkeston on opening day.

RAJ Man of the Match: Bruce Keir.
